Remember to inquire about The Creel’s fly tying classes. The classes can greatly improve your flies and techniques. There are fly tying classes available for all skill levels. These classes are also a great way to become familiar with the area’s best fly patterns and the insects they imitate. The current pattern, for the early season, is the Zebra Midge. This little fly is very simple to tie, and is an excellent producer. This fly is a favorite on the Clinch River and other area streams during winter and early spring. Midges are an important source of food for trout in Tennessee, and especially for Clinch River trout. Along with scuds and sow bugs, midges are a mainstay in the Clinch River trout’s diet.
Black Un i-Thread 8/0 Tungsten Bead (silver) UTC Ultra Wire (silver) |
STEP 2: Tie in the silver wire behind the bead and wrap back toward the hook bend. STEP 3: After securing the wire, continue to wrap the thread until you have a nicely tapered body as pictured. Let the thread and bobbin hang just behind the bead (1st image).
STEP 5: Trim the wire and whip-finish the fly just behind the bead-head (2nd image). Apply head cement over the thread and wire. This adds some shine and increases the durability of the Zebra Midge. Fly Tying Materials: |
